The Danish Series

The relationships between men and women using narrative, metaphor and places started with Hopper making a linoleum cut print as an example for her students in Denmark in 1992. The students loved interpreting art and they saw so much in “Bicycle Lovers” that Janette became interested in pursuing more narratives with similar attitudes. She had an exhibit coming up in Copenhagen of her large oil paintings and when she saw the space for the exhibit there was a narrow intimate room on the side where her paintings could not be viewed from a distance. She made more small prints of young people she observed around Aarhus and so was born the first series.

The figures were nude to represent openness, innocents and to make them as timeless as Adam and Eve. She was also exploring the Danish culture through observation of architecture and the life playing out on the street. Since the Danes mostly walk or ride bikes, life is where you can see it.
