Freedom of Expression Series

These linoleum prints were made in the year following an incident in Washington State where Hopper’s linocut prints were censored and excluded from an exhibit in a government building by city officials in 1996 because of their content. The work had been invited to be shown there and Ms. Hopper agreed to show it as a community service.

One of her reactions to the censorship, the media coverage and comments that followed the event at Pasco City Hall was to research how other artists had portrayed male and female nudes in art. The most important images she found were of Adam and Eve… A strong compulsion led her to create the Freedom of Expression series. Hopper says, “in this series direct allusions are made to the works of artists from the tenth century to the present that speak more powerfully than I could to current world problems”.
